Thoughts On Spiritual Warfare

I recently sent out the prophetic word by Matt Sorger, “A Time of Accelerated Breakthrough and a Season of Suddenlies“. While yes, this is true, this also seems like a time of warfare and distraction. 

I have noticed and have heard from others that the warfare level has recently increased. In general, the enemy would not be wasting so much of his time on anyone who is not a threat.

I recommend not focusing on or spending much time praying against warfare. We have found that it is much more effective to pray God’s blessings over our activities, families, church etc, as opposed to battling against the enemy’s backlash and attacks. This will keep us on the offense instead of the defense.

Backlash and warfare are a given if you are doing the work of Jesus. I actually try hard to ignore the backlash and keep my focus on God, and surprisingly it will go away sooner than later. If I begin battling back against the backlash, it can last much longer than it needs to. Do not get me wrong, we can pray protection and ask God to remove the attack, but we need to be careful not to enter into unnecessary battles.  There are times to speak to the circumstance or enemy to tell him to stop and desist a specific attack. Then pray the blessings of God and the blood of Jesus over the situation.

Some Additional Practical Steps 
Be careful not to focus too much on the efforts of the evil one. If we do, it will often cause us to have a more negative world view. Focus more attention on what Jesus is doing. I believe the Lord wants us to shift focus slightly for spiritual warfare and how to release the Lord’s blessings! His desire for us is to learn how to loose angels and kingdom blessings on Earth—just as it is in Heaven!

Speak the word of the Lord. In this year of Thunder, there is a heightened power released in our words. We exercise our spiritual authority by speaking.
“Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 18:18 NIV

3 Steps to practice spiritual warfare— to minimize backlash:
1. Stop complaining … start praying! It is important to be careful how you speak to others and even how you talk about your situation or circumstances. Speaking things that bring division or a lack of love can restrict the blessings of God instead of releasing them over your life. Especially in this year words are so very important. Words release spiritual power. 

Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find that I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed. Psalm 17:3 NIV

Rather than focus on negative things, it helps instead to find the positive in everything and everyone. I know this can be difficult but we are well able to be kingdom of God focused and not focused on the enemies activities around us. I have mentioned this key often this year. 

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8–9 NIV

2. Build up your character It’s important to remember that you have a real enemy who doesn’t have good plans for you. If you throw a punch—expect the enemy to punch back. 

The best way to overcome the enemy and bring him down in your life is to develop godly character. That way if you throw a punch, the enemy will miss when he tries to punch back because he has nothing in you. A person’s character is very important in ministry. Character is more important than gifting. We must have the character to keep us where our gifting takes us. I have seen many gifted people blow up because of character issues. Silence and Solitude are helpful to quiet our internal dialog long enough to see what really is there. Daily use of the Examen can help us develop godly character.

“I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.”John 14:30 NASB

We need to be careful not to battle in the areas we have not fully overcome in our own lives. Repent and ask for mercy. The enemy is a legalist. He wants to keep you out of the realm of God’s love and in the realm of legalism. Remember love covers a multitude of sins. You are loved in Jesus and accepted in Jesus. You have authority over the evil one because you are a servant of the King in whom all authority dwells.

3. Remember your assignmentRemember who you are and whose you are. You are a child of God! Don’t be distracted by the enemy and his ways. The Name and Blood of Jesus give us power and authority over demons, and—even greater—the power and authority to release the blessings and angels of God!

What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 1 Corinthians 2:12

You can learn to rise above all the negative noise and the spirit of this world and come into agreement with the thoughts and ways of the Lord. Get ready, the best is yet to come!
